Then how come so many films have copied and mimicked parts of it?
And they used so much wire work because 90% of the stuff they did couldn't have been done without it. Go train with a group of martial arts masters for 6 months, 18 hours a day, and then try telling me that what your doing sucks.
Oh opinion 4TW!
Please realize: just because lots of people like it doesn't mean it's good. Take That sucked, but there were a lot of boy bands made after their success. The Matrix movies pale in comparison to anything by Bruce Lee or John Woo (pre-Hollywood), mainly because of the lack of authenticity. While it's cool to see someone flying through the air firing guns while cartwheeling with trench coat flying, the mind is overwhelmed by the amount of "oh my god wow" stuff going on. Watch Hard Boiled, Enter the Dragon, or Ong Bak - the fight scenes are done in a highly artistic manner, yet do not rely on overly superhuman characters. Every single bullet in Hard Boiled is important. In the Matrix, the mass amounts of ammunition expended render the gunfights somewhat inane. In Enter the Dragon and Ong Bak, every punch and every kick makes contact, big time. As in, makes you wince. When Tony Jaa slams someone with his elbow, you can see the force of the blow merely in the movements of the bodies. In the Matrix films, you either have hyperfast martial arts that have no mass behind them, or you have way overdone power hits (the final fight between Neo and Smith in the third movie) while just get plain stupid.
Anyway, my current favorite is http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8514518157668120764 from the same director as Ong Bak. Although every gun battle in Hard Boiled is just exquisite.
